You can clean suede upholstery yourself

Suede is a beautiful and pleasant material that looks simply luxurious in the interior. It is also quite durable. But it also has a significant drawback. The porous texture of suede easily absorbs various contaminants: from dust to stains. That is why suede sofas are not very popular.

However, cleaning professionals claim that it is not so difficult to clean such furniture. OBOZ.UA tells you about a four-step method that will help you cope with this task quite easily.

Preparatory stage: tools and means

To easily cope with the task, collect the entire list of tools and products that you will need to clean a suede sofa. Here is what you will need to take:

  • a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush;
  • microfiber cloths;
  • suede stain remover;
  • distilled white vinegar (optional);
  • water (optional);
  • white office eraser;
  • dry cloth or paper towels;
  • baking soda;
  • brush for suede;
  • hair dryer.

Also, before cleaning, test all the collected products in inconspicuous places on the sofa. And don't forget that excessive use of chemicals and water can lead to stains on suede, so proceed with caution.

Step 1: Vacuum

Since suede absorbs even the smallest dust, you should start by thoroughly cleaning the sofa with a vacuum cleaner. Use only a soft furniture attachment to avoid damaging the material. And don't forget about the cracks and places under the cushions.

Step 2: Wipe with a damp cloth

Microfiber is the best choice for this as it is wrings out well, does not allow excessive moisture, and does not shed lint. Carefully squeeze the water out of the cloth and wipe the entire surface of the sofa in the direction of the suede.

Step 3: Remove all stains

If you notice any stains on your sofa, it's best to clean them right away. First, determine what type of contaminant caused the stain and use the appropriate product. You can also prepare a mixture of white vinegar and water in equal proportions and apply it to the stained area with a microfiber cloth.

Particularly stubborn stains, such as ink or drawing materials, can be rubbed with an eraser to remove the pigment mechanically. Grease will need to be collected with a paper towel, and the remaining stain should be sprinkled with baking soda, which can be vacuumed up in a few hours.

After cleaning the stains, you will need to dry the wet marks with a hairdryer. Choose a low temperature and a lower airflow mode.

Step 4: Dry

Regardless of the depth of cleaning your sofa need, let it dry well after the procedure. Do not use the item until all the moisture has evaporated. Finally, comb the upholstery with a suede brush to remove even the smallest particles of dirt that could remain in the material.
