DPRK executes citizens for distributing videos from South Korea - media
In North Korea, people are executed for drugs, distributing South Korean videos, and religious activities. This practice stifles human rights and freedom of citizens.
This is reported by the international news agency Reuters. South Korea's Unification Ministry, which oversees inter-Korean relations, has released a 450-page report based on testimonies collected from 2017 to 2022 from more than 500 North Koreans who fled their homeland.
"The right to life of North Korean citizens appears to be under serious threat. Executions are widely carried out for acts that do not justify the death penalty, including drug-related crimes, distribution of South Korean videos, and religious and superstitious activities," the ministry said in its report.
North Korea has rejected criticism of its rights conditions and called it part of a plot to overthrow its rulers.
The report details rampant state abuses in communities, prisoner of war camps and elsewhere, including public executions, torture and arbitrary arrests.
The ministry reported that deaths and torture regularly occur in detention facilities, and that some people have been summarily executed after being caught trying to cross the border.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said the report should better inform the international community about the North's "horrific" abuses, saying the DPRK does not deserve "a single penny" of economic aid while it pursues its nuclear ambitions.
Recall that Russian State Duma deputy Andrei Kolesnik proposed to introduce the death penalty for Russians who left Russia for other countries and criticise their country and government from there. He called such people traitors.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Deputy Head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev also announced the return of the death penalty in Russia. According to him, this type of punishment may be returned if the danger of serious crimes goes through the roof or there is wartime.
