Can you leave grass on the lawn

Mowing your lawn isn't just about aesthetics. Tall grass can harbor harmful insects, including ticks. Mowing should begin when the height of the vegetation is more than 10 cm. However, it is worth noting that grass that is too short (less than 5 cm) will dry out quickly in the summer heat, which, firstly, will not add beauty to your lawn, and secondly, will create a fire hazard on dry days.

In summer, lawns are usually mowed every few weeks. Can you leave grass on the lawn after mowing? Experts provided insights into Woman and Home.

When answering this question, several factors should be taken into account, such as weather conditions, temperature, and the amount of grass cut.

On one hand, grass clippings can significantly enrich your lawn, serving as a natural organic fertilizer. The cut stalks contain nutrients that act as a fertilizer or home compost, releasing beneficial trace elements. If the lawn needs fertilizing, you can leave the clippings on the turf surface for a while to release nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium more quickly.

On the other hand, an excessive amount of grass will block sunlight, and the lawn will lack fresh air.

"During the summer months, especially when drought is expected, it is advisable to leave a small amount of grass clippings on your lawn as it will act as mulch and retain moisture in the soil, slowing down evaporation. However, it's important not to completely cover your lawn with grass clippings, as this can block sunlight and increase the risk of grass suffocation," explained Matt Adams, lawn care expert and founder of The Relentless Gardener.

With the onset of cold weather, organic matter will take longer to decompose. So, in the fall and spring, you should definitely not leave grass on the lawn, as it will block the already limited amount of sunlight.

"This increases the risk of waterlogging, infection with various diseases, and even moss growth," Matt warned.
