Tonia Matviienko told what she asked Vakarchuk to do after her mother's death

After the death of her mother, People's Artist Nina Matviienko, singer Tonia Matviienko received a lot of support from her colleagues, one of whom was Sviatoslav Vakarchuk. It was his singer who asked her to do him a favor – to sing his song, and the frontman of the band "Okean Elzy" did not refuse.

This happened after Vakarchuk expressed his condolences following the news of Nina Matviienko's death and noted that he was always ready to help her daughter. "If you need anything, always contact me," Tonia Matviienko recounted his words in an interview with Slava Demin.

After some time, the singer decided that she would take the opportunity and asked Sviatoslav Vakarchuk to cover the song "Friend" by "Okean Elzy," which was written more than 20 years ago. The artist immediately agreed to the offer, but named one condition.

"I suddenly realized that I wanted to sing his song. And he asked me which song. "Friend." He said: "That's unexpected." He immediately agreed, but asked me to let him hear me sing," the singer said.

She admitted that the recording of the track lasted about four months. Tonia Matviienko wanted to involve producer Ivan Klymenko in the work, and so the wait for this opportunity pushed the deadline.

"About 4 months later (I recorded the song – Ed.), because I was waiting for Ivan Klymenko's response for a long time. I wanted him to make this song," the singer said.

Later, she fulfilled her promise and let Sviatoslav Vakarchuk listen to her version of the song. "He wrote 'well done' and two yellow and blue hearts," Matviienko said of his reaction.

In particular, the singer admitted that the band granted her the rights to the song and allowed her to make a profit from listening to the track. However, most of the earnings still go to "Okean Elzy." "They gave me a little bit of interest," explained Tonia Matviienko.
