Poland and the Baltic States called on the EU to create a defense line on the border with Russia and Belarus

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have called on the European Union to build a defense line along the border with Russia and Belarus. In this way, they want to protect the EU from military threats and other harmful actions by the aggressor country.

To implement this plan, financial support from all EU members is needed. This was reported by Reuters.

In a letter to the EU President, the leaders of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia said that this project is designed to protect a bloc of 27 countries with a population of 450 million people. They also emphasize that the creation of a defense infrastructure system along the EU's external border with Russia and Belarus will meet the acute and urgent need to protect the EU from military and hybrid threats. In addition, the letter states that the planning and construction of the defense line on the EU's eastern border should be carried out in coordination with NATO and its military requirements.

The scale and cost of this joint project requires targeted action by the EU to support it politically and financially. Some EU diplomats have estimated the cost of building such a defense line on the ground along the EU's 700-kilometer border with Russia and Belarus at about 2.5 billion euros.

It is worth noting that European investment in defense and its financing will be one of the main topics of discussion for EU leaders at the EU leaders' summit in Belgium, as Russia's war against Ukraine has been going on for three years and Moscow is intensifying hybrid operations against the West.

It is noteworthy that the call for joint funding for a ground-based defense line on the EU's eastern border complements an earlier initiative by Greece and Poland to create an EU air defense system similar to Israel's Iron Dome, which would coordinate the now separate air defense systems of the EU countries.

The total length of the state border of Poland and the Baltic states with Russia and Belarus is about 2083 km.

As a reminder, Poland has started building fortifications on the border with Belarus. According to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, this decision was made due to pressure from the regime of dictator Alexander Lukashenko.
