Russia attacked Chernihiv with ballistic missile

Russian terrorists attacked the centre of Chernihiv with an Iskander-M ballistic missile on Saturday, August 19, at around 11:30. As a result of the shelling, seven people were killed, including a 6-year-old child, and 90 people, including 12 minors, sought medical assistance.

The head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration Viacheslav Chaus reported the war crime of the Russian army on Telegram. He urged the residents to stay in shelters (to watch the video, scroll to the end of the news).

The missile struck the Drama Theatre on Red Square city's main square. The theatre was hosting an exhibition of drone manufacturers called Liuti Ptashky. The explosion shattered windows in the surrounding buildings.

The acting mayor of Chernihiv Oleksandr Lomako, said that all emergency services are working at the scene.

"There is information about the wounded. The data is being clarified," he added.

"Unfortunately, there is information about the dead," Lomako wrote later.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reacted to the terrorist attack in Chernihiv by posting a video from the scene.

"A Russian missile hit the city centre, our Chernihiv. A square, a polytechnic and a theatre. An ordinary Saturday afternoon that Russia turned into a day of pain and loss. There are dead and wounded. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones..." the Head of State wrote.

The Honcharenko Centre that is located next to the Drama Theatre, was also damaged. The blast wave smashed everything in the building, as the centre's director Oleksandr Yasenchuk wrote on Facebook. He showed the aftermath of the Russian attack and called on citizens to help cover the windows with plywood.

Chaus said that the relevant services are working at the site and confirmed that there are dead and wounded.

"The priority is to provide assistance. More details later," he wrote.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko said that there are 5 dead and 37 injured, including 11 children, as of 13:00. Everyone is being provided with medical assistance.

However, later the death toll increased to six people: according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a 6-year-old child died of serious injuries. Patrol policemen tried to resuscitate her, but to no avail. The dead girl's mother is in serious condition.

Klymenko said that the body of the seventh victim of the Russian terrorist attack had been found at 14:17. The victim has not yet been identified.

"The body of another victim was found in Chernihiv. It is an unidentified woman. The death toll has risen to 7. 90 injured have sought medical assistance. 10 police officers and 12 children are among them. 25 people were hospitalised. A 12-year-old girl is being urgently transported to Kyiv. The child is in serious condition," the Interior Minister said.

Klymenko also added that a fire broke out on the roof of one of the buildings. Rescuers from the State Emergency Service extinguished the fire. 20 investigative teams of Chernihiv police and 2 forensic laboratories are working at the scene.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, a Russian missile strike destroyed the roof of the drama theatre, a fire broke out. The windows of the 3rd State Fire and Rescue Unit in Chernihiv were also damaged. A shop fire was extinguished.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, the occupiers launched two missiles at Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region at night, damaging a factory shop. Four civilians were injured in the region during the day as a result of enemy shelling.
