Kyiv in the lens of a German photographer

Old photographs remain perhaps the only opportunity to see what Kyiv was like in the early nineteenth century. In 1918, a German photographer took a series of pictures of the city center while in the capital.

The archival photos were published in the community "Thirst: Kyiv is interesting" on Facebook. You can see what the capital was like more than 120 years ago.

"Kyiv through the lens of a German photographer. 1918," the post reads.

The published photos show the snow-covered streets of the capital in the last year of the First World War.

Before the Internet, the only way to get the information you needed was through so-called "information bureaus." Thanks to the network of these establishments, which numbered 34 in different districts of Kyiv, residents of the capital, among other things, found the addresses of friends and businesses.

Boryspil International Airport received its first flight back in 1959. In 1968, newsreel filmmakers captured two minutes of everyday life at Kyiv's main airgate.
