Never before! Ukraine wins historic gold at the European Aquatics Championships 2024
Our compatriot showed a phenomenal result
Ukrainian swimmer Oleksandr Zheltiakov has become the champion of the European Aquatics Championships, which are currently taking place in Belgrade, Serbia. The 18-year-old from Dnipro won the 200-meter backstroke.
This was the first ever gold medal for our country in this discipline at the European Championships.
With 50 meters left in the race, Zheltiakov was third, but eventually snatched the victory over Apostolos Siskos from Greece with a 0.03-second advantage.
Zheltiakov's result in the Euro 2024 final is a new national record for Ukraine in this distance. The previous record, also held by Zheltiakov, was improved by 0.4 seconds.
