Tucked away on the southwest coast of Crete in Greece, Elafonisi Beach is one of the most remote on the island. However, this does not diminish its popularity – the beach attracts visitors in the hope of catching a glimpse of its incredible pink sand.

This beach is called the "treasure of Greece". It is known for its magical natural features – pink sand, writes Express.

At first glance, you will be greeted by crystal-clear water that sparkles under the sun in shades of turquoise and blue. Soft white sand covers the shore, dotted with sun loungers and umbrellas that can be rented in high season.

But it is the pink sand that is one of the most striking features of this beach. The pink sand is formed by the scattered red shells of foraminifera, a single-celled microorganism with a shell.

When these shells are mixed with the white sand on the beach, the illusion of beautiful pink sand is created.

However, experts on the Tripadvisor travel site warn that travelers should "temper their expectations" because the sand can vary in pink hue depending on several factors: "The amount of pink on display depends on the conditions and season. However, despite this, the crystal clear water makes this summer vacation spot very popular. It attracts both sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts."

With stunning juniper-lined mountains serving as a backdrop to the colorful beach, it's a postcard-worthy destination and has been voted one of the top beach destinations in Europe.

The beach is easily accessible by car, but if you don't rent a car on your trip to Crete, the beach can be visited as part of a group tour from Chania. These are usually day trips that offer a good chunk of time to enjoy the beach, along with stops for food and drinks along the way.
