Moisture can seriously damage wooden surfaces and even lead to the active growth of fungal spores. Wood reacts instantly to moisture. For example, without the protection of a cup holder, condensation from a glass of cold drink leaves a mark on a wooden countertop.

If the water stains are light, it means that the moisture has not yet had time to absorb deeply into the wood. Experts say there are several convenient options for dealing with water stains using simple and affordable ingredients.

Expert Bob DeGraff, president of N-Hance, noted that the last step for each option is to apply a wood polish or conditioner, but only if the wood is untreated.

Method 1

An ordinary white toothpaste that does not contain abrasive particles will do.

  • Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the affected area.
  • Use a soft cloth to gently rub the toothpaste into the stain.
  • Wipe off the toothpaste. Apply a polish or special conditioner suitable for the type of wood.

Method 2

  • Cover the stain with a dry cloth.
  • Turn the iron on to a low heat setting.
  • Gently press the iron onto the fabric and move it in a circular motion. Check the stain as you go, adjusting the heat level if necessary.
  • Apply a polish or conditioner suitable for the type of wood.

Method 3

Vinegar is something of a cure-all for all cleaning problems, but you should proceed with caution if you choose this method. The problem is not only in adding the liquid to the surface. Vinegar is an acid that can damage the topcoat.

If you've exhausted other gentler options, here's how to use vinegar to remove water stains:

  • In a small bowl, mix distilled white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio.
  • Dip a microfiber cloth in the solution.
  • Wipe the stain with the cloth and wipe dry with a clean cloth.
  • Apply a polish or wood conditioner suitable for the type of wood.
