The heat wave that has been plaguing Ukraine in recent weeks can have a negative impact on health and well-being, especially for infants and young children. During periods of extreme temperatures, it is especially important to ensure their safety and comfort.

To avoid having to deal with the consequences of heat stroke, it is better to prevent the negative effects of heat on children's bodies. The UNICEF Foundation provided the relevant recommendations.

So, to protect children from high temperatures:

– Keep a close eye on their activity, even if they are playing indoors.

– Watch for early signs and symptoms of heat illness.

– Avoid being outdoors during hot midday and afternoon hours.

– Help children gradually adapt to exercise or any other physical activity.

– Help them to adapt slowly to exercise or any other physical activity.

– Encourage children to rest and cool down in the shade when they start to feel hot.

– Remind children to drink water frequently to maintain their water balance.

Recommendations for protecting babies from heat:

– Create cooler places for babies and children.

– Consider loosely swaddling babies during the hot season to help them cool down.

– When breastfeeding, mothers should continue to do so throughout the hot season. Breastfed infants should not be given water during high temperatures.

– Pregnant women are advised to always moisturize their skin well.

– The Ministry of Health also gave advice on how to survive the heat, as it can cause sunburn, sunstroke, and heat stroke. In addition, tanning damages skin cells and is associated with an increased risk of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, regardless of age or gender.
