In Mexico, after heavy rains, a pyramid that was more than 1,000 years old collapsed. The local tribe immediately saw this as a bad omen.

The brick pyramid is located in the Ihuatzio archaeological zone in the Mexican state of Michoacán. The descendants of the ancient Purepecha tribe that built the structure said the storm could signal "impending doom" because such an event occurred "because the gods were not happy," the DailyMail writes.

The collapse of an ancient pyramid in Mexico caused fear among locals.

"For our ancestors, the builders, it was a bad omen, indicating that an important event was coming. Before the arrival of the conquistadors, something similar happened, which for the Purepecha worldview of the time was because the gods Nana Kuerhaepiri and  K'eri Kurikweri were not happy," said Tariacuiri Alvarez, a member of the ancient Mexican tribe.

However, experts from the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH) said that natural factors caused the destruction.

"The collapse occurred in the central part of the southern façade of one of the pyramidal bases of the Ihuacio archaeological zone. The high temperatures previously recorded in the area and the subsequent drought caused cracks that contributed to the filtration of water inside the pre-Hispanic building. And then there were the rains," INAH said in a statement.

The pyramids of Ihuatzio are considered one of the main archaeological sites in the region.

Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History said it had taken steps to protect and restore the pyramids. "Damage assessment activities are ongoing and focus not only on restoring the affected area but also on thoroughly repairing the building structure," INAH said.

The day before, an arch in Utah National Park collapsed due to erosion. The double arch, also called the toilet and the crescent, was formed from 190 million-year-old Navajo sandstone, which originated in the late Triassic period before the beginning of the Jurassic period.
