What is the right way to say "DO NOT" to children: seven basic rules

1. "DO NOT" means unacceptable and life-threatening things.

2. Whenever possible, replace the word "DO NOT" with "DANGEROUS".

3. There should be few "DO NOTs", otherwise it will be devalued and the child will stop hearing it.

4. A "DO NOT" implies a specific consequence if the child breaks the ban.

5. Explain what is allowed and when. Offer an alternative, "DO NOT do this, but you can DO THIS".

6. If the situation permits, replace DO NOT with an explanation. For example, "Give me your hand, we will cross the road together. It is dangerous for a child to cross the road alone."

7. DO NOT means DO NOT.

Prohibitions are necessary and important, but they should not be the main tool of upbringing. Prohibitions have an auxiliary function.

P.S. What did your parents forbid you that you think should not have been forbidden (it caused you a strong resentment or protest)?
