How to clean your toaster correctly

For many people, a toaster is an indispensable item that they can't get through the morning without. Toasted bread with various spreads is a great addition to your morning coffee.

However, the toaster needs to be operated properly. Over time, bread crumbs can lead to serious clogging and a burning odor. The Sun shares an effective three-step method for cleaning your toaster.

Step 1

Most toasters have a crumb tray that should be emptied at least once a month, and weekly if you use the appliance daily.

Cleaning expert Melissa Pateras said that you can usually do this by opening the tray on the side of the appliance, but it's best to check the instruction manual.

Make sure that the toaster is completely unplugged before cleaning.

Crumbs don't just start to smell unpleasant over time and produce a burning odor every time you use the toaster - they can cause serious blockages, sometimes even leading to a fire.

After emptying the crumbs directly into the bin, wash the tray with soap and water and let it dry completely.

Step 2.

Melissa advises removing the crumbs that remain in the toaster in the following ways:

  • you can blow them off with a hairdryer, but this is definitely not the cleanest method;
  • or you can carefully tip the toaster upside down directly over the trash can and shake the appliance slightly.

Step 3

You can remove any traces of carbon deposits with aluminum foil. Crumple it into a ball, lightly moisten it and wipe the appliance.

The outside of the toaster can be polished with a microfiber cloth to get rid of dirt and stains.
