Film about Navalny won the Oscar

On the night of March 12 to 13 at the famous Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (USA) hosted the 95th award ceremony of the most prestigious film award "Oscar-2023". The award in the category "Best Documentary Feature Film" went to Canadian documentary filmmaker Daniel Roehr's "Navalny," about the poisoning of the Russian opposition leader in 2020, his treatment and return to Russia.

It became known to OBOZREVATEL when watching a live broadcast of the ceremony on the channel "Suspіlne Kultura". Alexei Navalny's wife Yulia and their children, daughter Darya and son Zakhar, came on stage together with the director to get the golden statuette.

Navalnaya was given the opportunity to address the international public on such a prestigious stage with a cynical speech about the "good Russians" who suffer from Putin's dictatorial regime and do not support "his" war.

The documentary "House of Splints" produced by Denmark, Ukraine, Sweden, and Finland about Ukrainian children in the war in Donbas added even more cynicism to the situation. The heroes of the documentary were children from an orphanage near Lisichansk, Luhansk region. This work was ignored at the Oscars, as were the themes of Russian aggression, full-scale war, and Ukraine's struggle in principle.

"Alexei, the world has not forgotten your important message: all of us should not be afraid to stand up to dictators and authoritarianism... My husband is in prison just for speaking the truth, fighting for democracy. Alexei, I dream of the day when you will be free and our country will be free," Yulia said on the Dolby stage wearing a symbolic blood-colored dress.

The reaction of Ukrainians was not long in coming. Network users are trying to understand why the film academy, which denies Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky the opportunity to speak at the awards, arguing that it allegedly considers itself "apolitical", provides a platform for "good Russians".

Meanwhile, Ukrainian journalist Ostap Yarysh decided to remind Ukrainians why they should not consider Navalny a "friend" and a "fighter for democracy":" Remember: just because you are against Putin does not cancel out your imperialistic and chauvinistic views".
