How to fertilize a plum tree in spring

In the spring, when the sun's rays become more gentle and the ground warms up, it's time to take care of your fruit trees, including plums. It is at this time that the foundation for the future harvest is laid.

In order to get a plentiful plum harvest, it is important not only to properly care for the tree, but also to feed it in time. The blog of gardeners and summer residents Varra tells about when and how to do this.

Feeding plums in spring is a guarantee of a plentiful and high-quality harvest. For the tree to grow healthy and bear fruit for many years, it is necessary to apply the right fertilizers.

For full growth and development, plum trees need nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and fertilizers containing magnesium.

The first feeding in the spring is carried out when planting a seedling.

To prepare the fertilizer, you will need: a bucket of compost or humus; a bucket of peat; 250-300 grams of granular superphosphate and 500 grams of ash, lime or dolomite flour.

Further, until the plum begins to bear fruit, it does not require special care. And the use of nitrogen elements during this period is even contraindicated.

Fertilizing seedlings

Annual seedlings are fed with nitrogen-containing fertilizers until their first fruiting. Also, plum crowns are sprayed with a weak solution of urea or carambide.

Fertilizing adult trees

Mature trees should start fertilizing before flowering. You will need 10 liters of water and 40 grams of urea. Three buckets of this solution will be needed to feed one tree. You can also use rotted manure once every 3 years.

Also, in the spring, at intervals of 2-3 years, ash or carbonates, which contain calcium and magnesium, should be used.

When pouring fruit or after digging the soil, it is worth feeding the plum with 60 grams of superphosphate, 20 grams of potassium sulfate and a handful of urea.

After harvesting, a phosphorus-potassium complex is usually placed under the tree.

Do not forget that each feeding of the tree should be accompanied by loosening of the soil. Thanks to this, the root system receives the right amount of oxygen.
