The Kapranov brothers (twin brothers Vitaliy and Dmytro Kapranovy) are Ukrainian writers, publishers, public figures and bloggers.
Brief biography
Vitaly and Dmitry Kapranovy were born on July 24, 1967 in Dubasari (modern Moldova).
Then together with their family moved to Ochakov, Mykolayiv region, where they graduated from high school, where Ukrainian was not taught. They also graduated from sports (Greco-Roman wrestling) and music (piano) schools.
Dmytro and Vitaly received their higher education at the Ural Polytechnic Institute of Sverdlovsk (RF) and the Moscow Power Engineering Institute.
In 1988, the brothers married twin sisters and moved to Moscow, where they worked in the pharmaceutical and wine business, and also engaged in publishing, publishing in the capital of the Russian Federation the Ukrainian newspaper Tyndy-Ryndy and the Ukrainian fiction magazine Brothers.
In those times Vitaly and Dmitry also started working on their first book "Kobzar 2000", completed 10 years later already in Kiev, when they returned to Ukraine. Faced with the problem of finding a publisher for the book, the brothers decided to take matters into their own hands and become publishers.
Already in 1998 they published a catalog of books by mail "Knigonosha", which included books from all publishing houses, regardless of the year of publication. 600 titles were collected.
A year later the Kapranovs in cooperation with the TV channel "1+1" organized the first competition of Ukrainian edgy literature "Golden Babai". In which the novel "Key" by Vasyl Shklyar won.
Green Dog Publishing House
In 2000, the brothers launched the publishing house "Green Dog", which they themselves headed.
A year later came out "Kobzar 2000", which was illustrated by Vladislav Yerko.
Subsequently, the brothers' publishing house published their other books, as well as modern Ukrainian literature.
The publishing house also published an 80-page "Drawing History of Ukraine's Independence" by the Kapranovs.
Public activities
In 2004, protesting against the Ukrainian government's decision to stop funding the book publishing, the Kapranov brothers, together with other writers, burned the manuscript of a new novel under the building of the Cabinet of Ministers. As the action received great publicity, the government eventually changed its decision.
In the same year, the brothers began publishing a literary newspaper called The Reader's Friend, which was published twice a month.
Since 2005, the Kapranovs launched the project "Gogol Academy", which as of 2024 functions in the format of the website gak.com.ua. The project allows everyone to publish their works and receive feedback or reviews.
In 2011, the brothers opened the first All-Ukrainian contest of Taras Shevchenko lookalikes.
In September 2019, Kapranov brothers founded the YouTube channel "In theName of Taras Shevchenko", in which they publish videos about the history of Ukraine.
War in Ukraine
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022, the brothers took up arms and defended Kiev from the occupants in the ranks of the Azov regiment.
