Oleksandr Litvinenko is the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, former deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.

Brief biography

Alexander Litvinenko was born on April 27, 1972 in Kiev.

He received his higher education in Moscow, graduating in 1994 from the Institute of Cryptography, Communications and Informatics of the Russian Federal Security Service Academy.

In 1998, he defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Political Science at the Institute of International Relations of the Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Four years later, he also defended a scientific degree of Doctor of Political Sciences in the specialty "Fundamentals of National Security of the State".

In 2009, he graduated from the Shevchenko Kyiv National University. In 2009, he graduated from Shevchenko Kyiv National University with a specialization in law.

He also studied at the Royal College of Defense Studies in London.

From 1994 to 1998, he worked in the SBU as an officer, senior officer and chief specialist of the information protection department of the main directorate of government communications.

From 1997 to 2007 he was an assistant and part-time associate professor at the Institute of International Relations of the Shevchenko National University of Ukraine. In 2010 he became a professor.

In 2005-2007 he worked as Head of the Department of State Security, Head of the Expert Commission, Head of the Department of State Security of the Office of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

From August 2009 to June 2010, he was an advisor to the director of the Institute of National Security Problems at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

In April 2014, he was appointed deputy secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.

Since August 2019, by decision of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, he was dismissed from the post of deputy secretary of the SNBO and appointed director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies.

On July 23, 2021, he was appointed head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine by presidential decree.

He holds the rank of major-general of the reserve.

Family

Litvinenko is married. Has a son and a daughter.
