Mahuchikh says Russia made her cry the day after her world record

Paris 2024 Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh had only a few hours to enjoy the moment when she set a new world record in the high jump on the evening of July 7. The very next morning, the Russian terrorist state launched a missile attack on Kyiv, destroying one of the branches of the Okhmatdyt hospital.

Mahuchikh recalled this in an interview with Relevo. The 22-year-old track and field athlete from Dnipro noted that she experienced an incredible psychological shock when she learned about another horrific war crime committed by the Russian Federation. Yaroslava also added that she continues to compete for the sake of the country.

"After the record, I felt very happy because it was a great achievement for my country, everyone congratulated me. But the joy lasted only one day, then the rocket attack on the children's hospital happened. I cried a lot. I jump for my people, for Ukraine, I fight from the track. When soldiers write to me on Instagram to congratulate me, it motivates me," Mahuchikh said.

As a reminder, the Ukrainian athlete jumped 2 meters 10 centimeters and broke the record of Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova, who had held it for 37 years.
