Our athletes fought with dignity against titled rivals
Ukraine's biathlon team of Khrystyna Dmytrenko, Yulia Dzhyma, Anton Dudchenko and Vitalii Mandzyn took 6th place (+3:38.9) in the mixed relay. The race of the 1st stage of the World Cup of the 2024/2025 season took place in Kontiolahti, Finland.
Dmytrenko started her stage confidently, using only one extra round in the first prone shooting. The Ukrainian left the shooting range in 10th place with a 9.9-second lag. The 25-year-old native of Chernihiv slowed down on the course, but this allowed her to shoot the second round without any mistakes and move up to 5th place. After passing the baton, Khrystyna secured the team's 7th position with a time of 32.5 seconds.
The second stage was performed by Yulia Dzhyma, who started steadily but made one miss in the prone shooting and slipped to 9th place. However, the experienced biathlete recovered on the stand, performing flawlessly and raising Ukraine to 6th place. By the end of her stage, Dzima's speed dropped a bit, also passing the seventh baton, increasing the team's overall gap to 1 minute 49.1 seconds.
The third stage saw Anton Dudchenko confidently perform in the first prone shooting, shooting cleanly and retaining 6th place with a time of 1:56.9. However, Anton missed twice on the rack, which increased the gap. Nevertheless, he lifted the team to 5th place, passing the sixth baton in 2:47.1.
Vitaliy Mandzin ran the final stage. His first shooting in the prone was also flawless, allowing the Ukrainians to stay in 6th place with a gap of 2:31.8. Despite two additional rounds in the standing and an increase in the gap to 2:57.2, our biathlete retained the 6th place for the team.
Norway won the dramatic final, beating France by 0.8 seconds. Sweden came in third.
It is worth noting that the Ukrainian national team took 9th place in the opening race of the 1st stage of the Biathlon World Cup of the 2024/2025 season. Olena Gorodna and Artem Tyshchenko had a great single mixed relay in Kontilohti, Finland.
