Top 10 scariest sci-fi horror movies ever made

All Saints' Day, also known as Halloween, is not only a holiday of scary-funny costumes and carved pumpkins but also a time when imagination takes over from logic. On the spooky evening of October 31, people traditionally organize parties, fairs, and horror movie screenings.

Horror expert Neil McRobert has put together a selection of movies for this very occasion. However, instead of traditional, sometimes even hackneyed films, he turned to science fiction. "I decided to focus on films in which science and technology are the most significant source of terror," he told NewScientist.

10th place: Annihilation (2018)

Science is about finding answers, but this adaptation of Jeff Vandermeer's novel is more interested in ambiguity. The film tells the story of an expedition by a group of all-female scientists to the "Zone X" of heightened strangeness that formed in Florida after a meteorite crash. The movie begins with two brothers visiting the cult they were members of as children. It turns out that this place draws them into a creepy underworld.

6th place: The Invisible Man (2020)

Leigh Whannell has turned the familiar invisible man into a technological story about domestic violence. Elisabeth Moss plays Cecilia, the wife of Adrian Griffin, a wealthy "optical engineer" who abuses her. When Griffin dies, it seems that Cecilia is finally free, but she soon realizes that her husband is using his own technology to stay alive and invisible. It's a kind of technological persecution, in which every dark corner contains a potential threat.

5th place: Kairo (2001)

Japanese filmmakers were far ahead of the techno-horror curve at the turn of the millennium. Kairo is about the connection between technology and humans: a mysterious videotape causes the people of Tokyo to disappear en masse. This film was the first to truly utilize the way the Internet can make humanity disappear, both literally and figuratively.

4th place: Platform (2019)

In the wrong hands, social sciences can be just as frightening as scary technology. The Spanish-language thought experiment Platform is set in an absurdist multi-level prison. Every day, a lowering food platform allows the prisoners to eat. There is enough for everyone if the prisoners take only what they need. If they don't, those at the bottom will starve. It's a wonderful, angry satire about personal greed versus the good of society.

3rd place: Possessor Uncut (2020)

The story is about a future where brain implants exist. Thanks to them, killers can take over people's bodies and kill them with their hands. An entire corporation is behind the atrocities, and soon the main killer herself begins to undergo changes.

2nd place: The Fly (1986)

This is a movie that turns into a tragedy when a handsome mad scientist inadvertently mixes his DNA with that of an ordinary housefly. His slow transformation is described in horrifying detail. He loses his inner self, which looks extremely painful.
