The Orthodox Church of Ukraine adopted the New Julian calendar on September 1, 2023. The dates of holidays, fasts, and saint commemoration days are now observed 13 days earlier.

OBOZREVATEL has published the church calendar for 2024. It includes 12 feasts, which are categorized into the Lord's and the Virgin Mary's feasts based on their significance.

Some holidays are movable, and their dates change every year depending on the date of Easter.

  • Palm Sunday or the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem is on April 28
  • Ascension of the Lord is on May 9
  • Holy Trinity Day (Green Feasts, Pentecost) falls on June 23

The dates for the celebration of non-movable twelfth feasts are as follows:

  • Epiphany or Baptism of the Lord is on January 6
  • Presentation of the Lord is on February 2
  • Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on March 25
  • Transfiguration of the Lord is on August 6
  • The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on August 15
  • The Nativity of the Mother of God is on September 8
  • The exaltation of the Holy Cross is on September 14
  • The introduction of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on November 21
  • The Nativity of Christ is on December 25

Major church holidays:

  • Circumcision of the Lord is on January 1
  • The Nativity of John the Baptist is on June 24
  • Saints Peter and Paul is on June 29
  • The beheading of John the Baptist is on August 29
  • Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on October 1

Fasts in 2024

One-day fasts:

  • Epiphany (Epiphany Eve) - January 5
  • Beheading of St. John the Baptist - August 29
  • Exaltation of the Cross - September 14

Multi-day fasts:

  • Lent - from March 18 to May 4
  • Assumption Lent - from August 1 to 14
  • Christmas fast - from November 15 to December 24

There are weeks when there is no fasting, even on Wednesday and Friday:

  • Holy Days - from December 25 to January 4
  • The Week of the Publican and Pharisee - from January 24 to 30
  • Maslenitsa (Cheese Week) - from March 11 to 17
  • Easter (Light Week) - from May 5 to 11
  • Trinity Week - from June 24 to 30
