It is also better to wash kitchen towels separately. For example, you can soak them in a bowl with your regular detergent before putting them in the general wash.

New kitchen towels are best soaked in cold water for a few hours to help them soften. Then they can be washed in the machine on a normal cycle at 30 degrees. Finally, let the towel dry and it will be soft and comfortable enough for further use.
