Harvesting radishes

Radish is one of the first spring crops, so planting should start early. This tasty and healthy vegetable is the perfect addition to first courses and salads. However, in order to harvest a bountiful crop, you need to know certain growing rules.

Radish is rich in vitamins, amino acids, proteins, minerals, and many other useful compounds. Read the OBOZ.UA article on how and when to sow radishes.

When to start sowing radishes

You can sow radishes in several stages. This crop has a short growing season, so, depending on the variety, it takes 25 to 40 days from the first germination to a full harvest. Radishes can be sown in early spring under agrofibre.

Radishes are not afraid of short-term frosts, so experienced gardeners sow them even in September. But the vegetable does not tolerate heat at all - the fruits become bitter and hard. Similar disadvantages can occur if spring radishes lack watering and sun.

Optimal temperature

Seedlings begin to germinate at a temperature of +2 +3 °C, small sprouts can withstand frosts down to -3 °C, and ripe fruits can cope with larger frosts. In general, the optimal temperature for growth is +16 +18 °C.

Planting rules

  1. The distance between the rows should be 8-10 cm, and after thinning, about 4 cm should be left between individual plants in a row.
  2. The grooves are not too deep - 1-2 cm. With deep planting, root crops may not form.
  3. After the first germination, the radish should be thinned out for a good ovary.
  4. Radishes should be weeded regularly, watered and loosened.
  5. If necessary, protect radishes from pests.

During the growing season, you will even have to water twice a day - in the morning and in the evening. With a lack of moisture, the fruits turn out to be bitter and hollow inside, while the plant quickly shoots arrows.
