When to sow cabbage for seedlings: tips for a giant harvest

The cabbage harvest depends on many factors: the timing of planting seedlings, proper care of the seedlings, and the favorable phase of the moon. As early as March, gardeners start sowing seedlings, and experts have even developed a universal date formula.

Planting formula

There is a simple formula: A + B + C = D.

In this formula:

• A is the number of days from sowing to the first emergence of seedlings
• B - the period from germination to picking
• C - days before planting seedlings in the garden or greenhouse
• D is the total period from sowing seeds to planting seedlings.

What days are favorable for sowing cabbage

March

According to the lunar sowing calendar, cabbage should be sown on March 2, 3, 9-13, 16, 17, 24-26. Early varieties are sown on March 9-10, and medium and late varieties from March 9. If you are sowing broccoli or cauliflower, the favorable dates are March 9-11, 16, 17, 24-26.

April

April 7-9, 12-14, 17, 18, 21, 22, 25-27 are the most favorable days for gardening. Broccoli and cauliflower can be sown on March 7, 12-14, 21, 22, early varieties of cabbage on April 7 and 21-22, and medium and late varieties on April 7.

May

The moon phases will favor the growth and development of cabbage on May 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 23, 24, 30, 31. Early cabbage can be planted on May 3, 4, 30, 31, medium and late cabbage on May 3, 4, 21, 22, 30, 31, broccoli and cauliflower on May 3, 4, 10, 11, 30, 31.

How to prepare the seeds

Do not choose small seeds, up to 1.5 mm, for planting. Roll the gauze into a triple layer, put the seeds in it, tie it in a bag, and place it in a thermos with warm water for 15-20 minutes. The water temperature should be between +45 and +50 °C. Give the seeds a contrast shower by dipping them in cold water immediately after the thermos.

Keep the seeds on a damp gauze on a saucer for at least a day, and then in the refrigerator at +1+2 °C.

The dried seeds are ready for planting. Store-bought seeds can be sown immediately, without preparation.

Diving

For cabbage, picking is not necessary. If you don't want to do this, sow the seeds directly into separate containers. Gardeners often sow cabbage in one large container, and then plant the grown seedlings in pots.

What are peat tablets

Experts advise growing seeds in peat tablets. They should be at least 4 cm in diameter.

Fill the tablets with water and wait until they increase in size. Then pour off the excess water and put 2 seeds in each tablet. Fill the holes with peat and place the seedlings in a warm place until they germinate.

Seedlings in the greenhouse

Dig the rows at a distance of 15-20 cm and water the soil generously. After that, you can scatter the seeds into the grooves. No more than three seeds should be planted per 1 square centimeter. Cover the seeds with soil 1-2 cm thick.
