Roses in the garden

After the winter cold, it is important to take care of garden shrubs to encourage their active growth. Spring pruning is a necessary step in caring for roses. The first pruning promotes the formation of new healthy shoots.

The second pruning is aimed at removing old, damaged and diseased branches that can be a source of infections. Read the OBOZ.UA article to find out when to start the process.

How to prune roses

First of all, you should pay attention to the variety of flowers: these can be shrub, standard, climbing, border and ground cover roses.

The general rule is to make a cut at a 45-degree angle, capturing 5-7 mm above the level of the bud.

Choose a clear, sunny day for the procedure. It is important to pay attention to the cut: if it is clean and white, it is a good sign. If you see that it is covered with brown spots, you should cut lower until the core is clean and healthy.

Diseased branches only take away the vitality of the bush, not giving strong shoots. Sanitary pruning should be aimed at removing dry, weak, and damaged branches.

When to prune roses

Experienced gardeners say that roses can be pruned from late March to early April. It is worth paying attention to the buds: if they are already swollen but have not yet begun to grow, the optimal time has come.

In general, pruning should begin when the threat of frost has passed. You can use other garden plants as a guide. For example, if the forsythia has already blossomed golden bell-shaped flowers, it means that other bushes are just beginning to wake up after winter. The flowering period of forsythia is often used as a signal for pruning rose bushes.
