The variety of dahlia shapes, colors, and sizes makes them a favorite of many gardeners. They are quite thermophilic flowers, so it is important not only to dig them up for the winter but also not to plant them too early in the spring.
To save the plant and not harm it, Prosto Way has told us when and how to plant them. Follow these tips to ensure that dahlias continue to delight the eye throughout the season.
When to plant dahlias
With the onset of spring, you want to surround yourself with flowering plants as soon as possible. However, if you plant dahlias too early while the soil is still cold, they can die. Thus, wait until the ground warms up to at least 15 degrees Celsius and the air temperature is stable.
Usually, flowers are planted no earlier than May, but you should still be guided by the weather.
Where and how to plant dahlias
Dahlias need a lot of sunlight, so it is recommended to choose well-lit areas.
Before planting, carefully inspect the dahlia tubers for damage and remove any that are damaged. In addition, divide the node of tubers into several parts if it is too large.
Plant the flowers in holes 10 centimeters deep. You can put the tuber in the hole horizontally to allow strong roots to grow.
The distance between plants should be selected depending on their variety and size. For undersized varieties, retreat 30 cm, and for very large varieties, spare 80 cm.
