Seeds are the basis of any crop. Much depends on their quality and proper preparation for sowing: germination, disease resistance, plant vigor, and health.
There is an opinion that the first and most important stage of sowing is soaking the seed, but in fact, this stage can only harm some crops. The Wall publication talked about which seeds for seedlings should never be soaked so as not to spoil them.
Cabbage crops
The seeds of cauliflower, white cabbage, broccoli, and other cabbage crops have very thin shells. It softens very easily and quickly in water and ceases to protect the seed from damage.
Soaking can also disrupt the natural moisture balance of seeds and negatively affect their germination.
Root crops
Root crops do not tolerate excessive moisture, so soaking carrot, parsnip, etc. seeds can lead to rotting of the seed.
Bulbous crops
Bulbous crops, as well as root crops, do not tolerate excessive moisture. In addition, the seeds of onions, garlic, etc. have a dense shell that does not allow water to pass through.
Therefore, at best, soaking will not have any positive effect, and at worst, this procedure can lead to seed rotting or cracking
Pumpkin crops
The situation with pumpkin, zucchini, cucumber, and other similar crops is the opposite. Their shells are very thin, so both they and the seed itself can be damaged in water. At the same time, pumpkin crops also do not tolerate excessive moisture. Excess water will certainly reduce germination.
