What not to clean with dishwashing detergent: five taboos

Dishwashing detergents are often used as the main components in many homemade cleaning solutions. Indeed, they have a stronger formula for removing stubborn and greasy stains.

However, cleaning experts advise caution when using dishwashing detergents for other purposes. OBOZREVATEL figured out what cannot be cleaned with these products.

Clothes

If you suddenly run out of laundry detergent and need to wash clothes urgently, do not use dishwashing detergent. It is especially dangerous for some types of fabrics, such as wool and silk. In addition, dishwashing detergent does not rinse well and will leave soap scum on things. Hard water can only aggravate the situation.

Leather furniture

Mixing dishwashing detergent with water and wiping the furniture with the solution can damage the leather. Dark spots will remain on the surface that cannot be washed off. Experts also emphasize that such detergents have a high pH level, so spot treatment of stains can lead to cracking and peeling of the leather surface.

Carpets

Carpets are typically cleaned with special foam products. Water should not be absorbed too much into the pile; otherwise, it can quickly lead to mold. Dishwashing detergent is difficult to remove from the fibers, and the carpet will remain wet for a long time. Alternatively, you can use a mixture of water and detergent, but keep the proportions strictly in mind: 1 teaspoon of detergent to 1 cup of water.

Toilet cistern

Sometimes, you may get the mistaken impression that dishwashing detergent is ideal for removing dirt and limescale from the cistern. But this is not the case. Detergents can damage plastic and rubber parts over time. It is better to buy special toilet cleaners.

Coffee maker

Similarly to the previous point, dishwashing detergent can damage some plastic parts in the coffee maker. If you do decide to wash the coffee maker from the inside with such a product, pay attention to the need for repeated and thorough rinsing; otherwise, there is a risk that the coffee maker will give you a cup of soapy coffee.
