The bedroom will sparkle: what things to clean every week

Yulia PoteriankoLife
Hygienic cleanliness in the bedroom is the key not only to a good rest, but also to health in general

Just think about it - we spend at least a third of our lives in the bedroom. And we don't clean it as thoroughly as we clean the bathroom.

However, the cleanliness of the air and the hygiene of the room where you sleep, and sometimes work and rest, are no less important. The condition of your respiratory tract, skin, and the quality of your night's rest will depend on how much dust and bacteria are around you. That's why we have compiled a list of things that need to be cleaned at least once a week to maintain the required level of cleanliness in the bedroom.

Wipe the dust from the furniture

Dusting your furniture weekly is not only a way to keep your room clean. By doing so, you also remove particles of potentially toxic building materials and chemical compounds that make up the furniture. You also get rid of dust mites.

Before dusting your bedroom furniture, start by cleaning the surface. Gather all the books, jewelry boxes, electronics, and other items. Then wipe the shelves and countertops with a damp microfiber cloth. This cloth traps dust instead of blowing it into the air. Be sure to wipe down with another dust cloth or brush before putting all items back in place.

Vacuum and mop the floor

Floors collect even more dust than surfaces, so they need to be cleaned just as thoroughly. Choose a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, which can prevent dust from being released back into the air during cleaning. This is especially important if you use carpets in your bedroom. After dry cleaning, be sure to mop the floor with a wet mop to pick up anything the vacuum didn't pick up.

Disinfect door handles and switches

We often ignore door handles and light switches when cleaning because they look clean. But, if you think about it, they come into contact with hands almost more often than anything else in the entire room. Almost every time someone walks in or out of a room, they touch the knob and light switch, leaving bacteria and viruses on them, including E. coli and the flu virus. So treat these points with a disinfectant once a week. Sometimes it is enough to spray it on the surface and leave it to dry completely.

Change your bedding, especially if you have pets sleeping with you

Bed linens can harbor bacteria and dust mites that feed on skin cells and sweat that fall on the bed during sleep. The more time that passes between changing the sheets, the more such particles accumulate on the textiles. Especially if you sleep with pets in the same bed. Especially if your pet walks outside. It can bring you infections such as skin fungus or parasites. If you don't want to give up sleeping with your cat or dog, start changing your bedding more often.

Clean your mattress

Along with changing your bedding, don't forget to clean the surface of your mattress. Go over it with a vacuum cleaner to pick up any dry dirt. Remove any visible stains, and even remove the cover to wash it as well. Wait until the mattress is completely dry before putting a fresh sheet on it.

A deeper cleaning of your mattress should be done about once every six months. In addition to dry cleaning and washing the cover, you can sprinkle baking soda on it and leave it for two hours before vacuuming it. The baking soda will absorb any excess moisture and eliminate odors from the mattress.

Vacuum upholstered furniture

Dust and other small particles of contaminants collect not only on hard surfaces, but also on upholstered furniture. Therefore, if you have chairs, poufs, armchairs, or a sofa in your bedroom, be sure to vacuum them once a week. Pet owners are advised to treat the surface with a hair brush beforehand.

Collect pet hair from carpets

Most cat and dog hair collects on the floor, particularly on carpets. And a vacuum cleaner is not always able to cope with such contamination. Therefore, don't forget to treat carpets with a hand brush to collect hair. Even if you just go over the carpet with a damp mop, you will collect much more of this dirt than you would with a vacuum cleaner. And you will significantly reduce the risk of developing allergies or asthma, which can be an unwanted side effect of having a pet.

Clean humidifiers and dehumidifiers

It's a good idea to install such a gadget in the bedroom, as they significantly improve indoor air quality and regulate humidity levels, which is also important. But at the same time, bacteria and mold can develop on the filters and grilles of dehumidifiers and humidifiers due to the constant presence of water and heat. And over time, the device will begin to spread them around. To prevent this, you need to wash all removable parts of such gadgets. You can also use a mixture of white vinegar and water in equal proportions to clean them.
