You shouldn't pet: why cats show their stomachs to their owners

Why you shouldn't touch your cat's belly

It's hard to resist the temptation to pet a cat's belly, especially when the cat is lazily stretched out on its back. Some owners believe that this is a way of showing trust and asking to be scratched, but it's not.

The stomach is a very vulnerable place, and it is very likely that you will get displeasure and claws in response to a touch. Catster experts told us why it is better not to touch a cat's belly.

Unlike dogs, who love to have their tummies scratched, cats are much more reserved about it. The percentage of cats who really like it when their owners scratch their stomachs is quite low.

According to veterinarians, natural instincts make animals not show their vulnerability too much. Cats will protect their stomachs from unnecessary touching, as vital organs are only millimeters away from the thin skin.

Even if a cat is lying on its back, it doesn't mean it's "inviting" you to scratch its tummy. It's just that the animal really feels safe with you. So don't "break" the trust by stroking, scratching, or tickling a vulnerable spot.

If you do decide to touch the cat's belly to check if the cat likes this gesture, veterinarians advise you to do it very carefully. Sit down next to it, slowly stretch out your hand, and if you see noticeable signs of discontent - twitching of the tail tip, a wary look at your hand - do not provoke the animal and give up the idea of scratching its belly.

By the way, scientists have figured out how to find a common language with a cat. It turns out that the main secret is to learn to smile at your pet, not in a human way, but in a feline way.
