Pepper is considered one of the most capricious and difficult crops to germinate. The heat-loving plant requires special conditions for planting, in particular, compliance with the lunar calendar.

The lunar calendar

In terms of the lunar calendar, there is only one favorable day left in February for sowing pepper for seedlings. This is the 29th. In March, the following dates will be successful: March 1, 2, 13, 14, 18, 19, 27, 28, and 29. On these days, you can put the seeds in the ground and place the pots in a greenhouse for germination.

How to sow peppers for seedlings

Universal seedling soil, which can be purchased ready-made, is suitable for this crop. If you want to make it yourself, mix humus, garden soil, and sand in a 3:3:4 ratio. Loosen everything up well so that there are no lumps in the mixture, and then roast it in the oven for 45 minutes to disinfect it. Perlite or vermiculite added to this soil should increase its water and air permeability, which is also beneficial for young plants.

The finished soil mixture should be poured into specially prepared seedling containers - peat cups or homemade containers. In the middle of each vessel, a hole is made about 1 cm deep and a seed is placed in it. The seed is covered, and the soil above it is compacted.

It is best to grow pepper seedlings one plant at a time in a pot, because this crop is not very willing to grow a strong root system, and it does not tolerate picking. Therefore, it is better to make sure that young peppers do not compete with each other for resources and space. The plant is transferred to the open ground together with the clod of earth in which it germinated. This will protect the roots from injury.
