Never keep these things in the kitchen: 5 items to throw away immediately

Some items and products in the kitchen can become a danger over time

The kitchen is one of the most unclean rooms in the house. High humidity and the constant presence of food, especially meat or dairy, contribute to bacterial growth, necessitating efforts to maintain cleanliness. Regularly replacing or discarding certain items can help.

OBOZREVATEL highlights five such things that, if used improperly, can become sources of infections and other issues.

Dish Sponge

Due to its porous structure, a sponge not only creates foam effectively but also accumulates food debris, fungal spores, bacteria, and viruses inside. Its nearly constant dampness promotes their reproduction. It's best to change the sponge at least once every two weeks.

Cutting Board for Food

Even plastic boards can accumulate food residues and microorganisms, especially in the micro-cuts formed during use. Periodically treating the board with boiling water can help disinfect it superficially. However, the board should still be replaced approximately every six months. It's advisable to discard the board if it loses its shape or develops an unusual odor. Experts also recommend having separate boards for different food categories, such as meat, bread, fish, and vegetables, to prolong their lifespan.

Damaged Dishes

For similar reasons, damaged dishes should be discarded. Cracks, small chips, and cuts can harbor bacteria that are challenging to wash out of such crevices. It's safer to purchase a new cup or plate than to expose oneself to potential dangers.

Expired Spices

Beyond losing their flavor, expired spices can lose aromatic properties, and the flavoring substances may develop undesirable qualities. Therefore, it's better not to keep expired spice packets and jars.

Opened Wine

Exposure to air causes wine to oxidize, resulting in a loss of taste and aroma, a change in color to a duller shade, and a flavor resembling rotten apples. Consequently, such liquid should not be consumed. While various factors impact how long uncorked wine can be stored, the average figures are approximately 2-3 days for white and sweet wines, and about a week for red and dry wines.
