How to wash towels to keep them fluffy

The softness of new towels often disappears after a few wash cycles. The fibers become stiff and unpleasant to the touch.

Although it seems impossible to keep towels soft and fluffy for a long time, experts have revealed a secret that hotels and spas use. You don't have to spend money on expensive professional products.

Life hacks for soft towels

According to Nic Shacklock, a cleaning specialist at Online Bedrooms, there are many methods used by professionals to keep towels in excellent condition for longer. And, fortunately, most of the ingredients are very cheap and available.

The following ingredients will come in handy: white vinegar, bleach, and an additional conditioner to make the fabric smell fresh and be soft.

Just add two to three cups of vinegar during the wash to help remove dirt and build-up between the fibers. An added bonus is that vinegar will destroy bacteria and deodorize towels. One bottle should be enough for at least two to three wash cycles.

Another life hack: set the washing machine to 40-60 °C and add liquid laundry detergent and ½ cup of white vinegar.

It's also important to make sure there's space in the washing machine. This reduces friction during washing, which tends to cause damage to the material.

Baking soda is also a necessary additive during washing. Just a quarter cup per cycle is enough to get rid of odors. As a preliminary cleaning, you can soak the towels in a mixture of hot water and baking soda: this procedure should be performed for an hour before starting the machine wash.

How often should towels be washed

Wet towels are an ideal environment for the accumulation of bacteria and fungal spores.

Dr. Ross Perry, director of Cosmedics dermatology clinics, emphasized that even though there are no set rules for how often towels should be washed, there are some nuances.

"If you're an avid gym-goer and sweat a lot, there will be a lot of dead skin cells and bacteria on the towel even after a shower, so you should wash towels if not every day, then at least every other day," Perry said.

In normal use, a few wash cycles per week are enough. The dermatologist advises to use peeling at least once a week to help get rid of dead skin cells before using a towel.
