A woman in the throes of pregnancy

There are many ways to describe the state of pregnancy in Ukrainian. In addition to the common word "pregnant," there are many other expressions that can be used depending on the context and personal preference.

However, the common Russian phrase "be in position" is not literally translatable, so linguists have described a number of phrases that would not be a mistake.

Such phrases as "to be in a position", "to be in an interesting state", etc. are a copycat from the Russian language. Experts recommend replacing these expressions and using "to be in a position".

How to translate ''to be in a position'' into Ukrainian: correct options

This expression is the most common substitute for the word "pregnant," emphasizing the positive expectation of having a child.

Grinchenko's dictionary specifies that this expression is common in Volyn. It probably came to Ukrainian from Polish "być przy nadziei" and to Polish from German "guter Hoffnung sein", "in der Hoffnung sein".

In addition to "to be in labor," the Ukrainian language offers several other variants of what a pregnant woman can be called. Among them:

  • In the thrust;
  • In the carriage;
  • In the weight;
  • Walking on weight;
  • In the last days;
  • Walks heavy.

However, it is important to know that some people may find certain synonyms offensive. For example, the word "rude" in the context of pregnancy is considered incorrect, outdated and not recommended for use.
