How to remove yellow stains on pillows: effective methods

Yulia PoteriankoLife
Different pillows and different stains require different cleaning products

Of all the bedding, the pillow comes into contact with exposed skin the most, which is why it gets dirty the most even if you have a replaceable pillowcase. And that's why dust mites love to settle in pillows, feeding on dead skin cells and causing various diseases.

But this doesn't mean that pillows should be thrown away and replaced with new ones all the time. According to the Express, there are several ways to freshen things up and give them a pleasant smell. For advice, it turned to bedding manufacturers, including Carl Walsh, who has worked in the industry for over 40 years.

Removing small stains

To remove spot stains, dilute your usual laundry detergent in warm water to create a lather. Gently blow this foam into the stain with a sponge until it disappears. Air dry the pillow cleaned in this way.

Eliminate odors

To remove unpleasant or foreign odors from your pillow, choose a sunny day. To treat it, remove the pillowcase, place it on a flat surface, and sprinkle it with baking soda. Leave the pillow in the sun for 2-3 hours, and then thoroughly vacuum it with a brush for upholstered furniture. Ultraviolet light will also disinfect the item.

Machine wash

Most modern pillows made of artificial materials can be machine washed, but you should read the instructions beforehand. Different materials require different temperatures and detergents. Important: memory foam pillows should not be cleaned in this way.

How to clean memory foam pillows

To wash such an item, pour warm water and a small amount of mild detergent into a basin or bathtub. Immerse the pillow in this solution and press it several times so that the soapy water passes through the internal structure and rinses it. Next, rinse the pillow in clean water several times in the same way until it stops emitting foam. Next, squeeze the pillow with a few presses. Do not twist it as this can damage the internal structure. Let it dry naturally.

Yellow spots

There can be several reasons for the appearance of yellow spots on the pillow. In any case, it is better to solve this problem as soon as possible before the dirt gets into the fabric.

If it's sebum from your face or hair, just treat the stain with shampoo. Apply it, soak the area with warm water, and rub it. Then wash the pillow as usual.

Traces of sweat and saliva are best treated with a mixture of water and white vinegar in a 1:1 ratio. Similar stains on pillowcases can be treated in the same way. Just soak the item for half an hour in the solution and wash it as usual.

The remnants of artificial tanning products are removed by a washing gel based on frents. But it should not contain bleach.

Experts also advised to wash or clean pillows every three months. This way, they will not have time to accumulate harmful microorganisms. They can be left under the sun for disinfection with about the same frequency.
