How to remove tape and paper from windows: spring life hacks

Sometimes it's a good idea to seal windows for the winter with tape or paper ribbons to keep them warm. Many Ukrainians have also strengthened their windows in this way to protect them from Russian bombardment. However, spring is coming and it's time to wash the windows. This means that this protection has to be removed. The problem is that the glue under the tapes has the ability to dry to the surface and it can be very difficult to clean it off.

OBOZREVATEL has collected several options for how to do this with the help of improvised means and without damaging either the window itself or the frame.

Oil

Any vegetable oil, including essential oil, can soften the glue. To do this, apply a little grease to the stain and wait 15 minutes. After that, the stain can be easily wiped off.

Ammonia

This product can safely clean both glass and plastic frames. However, it is important to keep the windows open because of the specific smell and effect of ammonia. It removes the adhesive immediately, just like a solvent.

Chemical solvents

Only glass should be cleaned with special products that dissolve various substances. They can damage the frame. Therefore, work carefully with a small amount of liquid. Solvents include:

• acetone and nail polish removers based on it;

• white spirit;
• gasoline.

They should be used only with the windows open as solvents have a pungent odor and can cause dizziness and even poisoning.

Soda

To make a soda-based glass cleaner, dissolve soda in a small amount of water to form a paste. This paste is applied to the glue stains and wiped off with a sponge. After using baking soda, rinse the window thoroughly to remove any residue.

What is better not to do

You should never rub glue stains with hard abrasives or metal brushes. They scratch the glass and damage the frame.

Caustic alkaline and acidic products can also seriously damage the window. Therefore, they should be avoided.
