How to prepare Bordeaux mixture for garden treatment in March properly

March is the time when gardeners begin active preparations for the new season. One of the most important stages of this preparation is the treatment of trees and shrubs with Bordeaux mixture, a fungicide that protects plants from fungal diseases.

It is used to treat fruit trees, berry bushes, vegetables, and flowers against diseases such as scab, moniliosis, etc. Gardening expert Maksym Haranzha told us how to prepare the Bordeaux mixture on his YouTube channel.

It is necessary to carry out the first and main treatment of your garden with Bordeaux mixture before budding.

Preventive treatment against fungal diseases is very important because it is much more difficult to get rid of the disease when it is already progressing.

To prepare a 3 percent solution of Bordeaux fluid for 10 liters of water, you will need:

  • 300 grams of copper sulfate;
  • 300 to 500 grams of lime;
  • 10 liters of water;
  • two plastic buckets.

All proportions and mixing sequences must be strictly observed to obtain the desired effect.

Use a plastic container for mixing to avoid oxidation.

First, pour 5 liters of warm water into each bucket. Add 300 grams of copper sulfate to one of them (it must have a bright blue color) and mix thoroughly.

Pour the lime into the second bucket and stir until it dissolves.

Next, start pouring the copper sulfate solution into the lime in a thin stream, stirring constantly. As a result, you will get a bright blue Bordeaux liquid that will save your garden from fungal diseases.

The expert recommends choosing dry, calm weather for the treatment. The wind speed should not exceed 3 meters per second.

Remember that this is a contact preparation, so it must be sprayed very densely and thoroughly.

In addition, be sure to wear a respirator and rubber gloves when treating plants. Despite the fact that Bordeaux mixture is not toxic to humans, it is still harmful. Thus, avoid getting it in your eyes, respiratory tract, or on the skin.
