How to know when it's time to throw away your pillow: two simple tips

How long have you been using the pillows you sleep on? They need to be replaced periodically because their filling wears out and not-so-healthy microorganisms can start to grow in it over time.

But how do you know when it's time to get rid of an old pillow? Popular TikTok blogger Lynsey, who calls herself the Queen of Clean, has come up with two quick tests. If your pillow doesn't pass them, it's time to buy a new one. (To watch the video, scroll down to the end of the news story)

Bending in half

For the first test, you need to bend the pillow in half. Put it on the bed and bend it with the top half pressed down with your hand. Hold it for 30 seconds and release it. If the pillow bends, it is still firm enough to support your head well while you sleep. If it stays bent, it's time to get rid of it.

Saddle test

Stretch your straight arm forward as if it were a horse's back and put a pillow over it like a saddle. If it lies parallel to the ground and keeps its shape, everything is fine. If the pillow hangs when you position it this way, it's time to replace it with a new and more elastic one.

How long can pillows be used

Experts on the suitability of furniture and accessories say that they all have a limited lifespan. Thus, all bedding accessories remain usable for a rather short time due to direct contact with the body.

Experts advise to replace pillows once every year or two. New bedding should be purchased about as often. But a lot depends on how often you use it.

Decorative pillows can last for quite a long time, about 5-10 years, provided that you change pillowcases on them often enough. Mattresses can be used for 6 to 8 years. Sofas also need regular replacement. While many families have used this piece of furniture for decades, experts say that it should actually be replaced every 7-15 years.
