How to grow Chinese cabbage in the garden

Chinese cabbage is a popular vegetable that is valued for its rapid growth and incredibly beneficial properties. It is not difficult to grow it in the garden if you know some of its peculiarities.

To ensure that the harvest is successful and you can enjoy fresh homemade salads with a lot of nutrients very soon, Zemliak has shared tips on how to care for the vegetable crop.

It would take a lot of time to list all the beneficial properties of Chinese cabbage, because it contains twice as many nutrients as white cabbage. It also contains 5 times more ascorbic acid than ordinary lettuce leaves.

Sowing

Chinese cabbage is a fairly cold-resistant crop. The most favorable temperature for growing is from 13 to 21 degrees Celsius.

If you want to get a harvest within 3-4 weeks after planting in the ground, then choose the seedling method for growing.

With long daylight hours, cabbage begins to bloom, so to avoid this, the plant should be planted in early spring (April 15-20).

When sowing in open ground, put the seeds to a depth of 1-1.5 cm and cover the beds with foil until they warm up. After 3 weeks, thin out the plants and leave a distance of 10-15 cm between them.

Soil

Chinese cabbage grows best in moist, fertile soil with a pH of 5-7. Sandy loam and loamy soil on cultivated peat bogs enriched with nutrients is ideal for the plant.

Before planting cabbage, the soil should be compacted.

Care

Chinese cabbage is not very demanding. All you need to do is weed, water regularly but moderately (soil moisture should be 60-70%), loosen row spacing, fertilize and, if necessary, treat for pests and diseases. During the period of cabbage formation, the daytime temperature should be 15-18 degrees, and the nighttime temperature should be about 10 degrees.

It is also important to maintain the optimal distance between plants. After you have thinned the cabbage, you can eat the leaves.
