How to get rid of unpleasant odors from animals

In addition to unconditional love and joy, animals also bring hair, dirt, and unpleasant odors into the home. Store-bought chemical fragrances often don't help solve the problem. A specific odor is natural for animals, no matter how often their owners bathe them. It is caused by the microbiome, bacteria and fungus that live and multiply in thick fur.

However, there are several life hacks that can help minimize the unpleasant odor. The Lifehacker publication told us more about it.

Veterinarians emphasize that fat not only performs a protective function and prevents germs from entering the body but is also a place of bacterial activity. That is, the more fat the animal's skin produces, the stronger the odor. A variety of microorganisms that feed on lipids and excrete waste settle outside the skin and also cause an unpleasant odor.

First tip

Use a wet vacuum cleaner for carpets and upholstery. If you have a pet (especially one that sheds), you need to vacuum regularly. Experts say that a vacuum cleaner is not enough. To eliminate dirt on the carpet or upholstery, including those associated with waste, you will have to wash the surfaces several times.

Second tip

Specialist Sara Ochoa emphasized that you need to clean your dog's ears regularly as they are often the source of a specific odor. She advises choosing an enzyme-based product to help break down wax residue.

Third tip

There are many odor neutralizing products on the market, including those specifically designed to remove stains and odors from pets. Enzyme cleaners eliminate stains and odors at the molecular level.

Fourth tip

You can also use improvised products. Vinegar is one of the safest odor neutralizers. Fill an empty spray bottle with water and white vinegar in a 1:1 ratio and spray the surface.

Fifth tip

Caffeine contains nitrogen, which makes carbon more effective in absorbing the sulfur odor that can accompany dog vomit and other biological problems. Add about a tablespoon of coffee grounds to a small bowl and place it near the affected surface. Place high enough that your pet cannot reach it.

Sixth tip

Sprinkle baking soda on the affected area of the carpet, leave it on for a few hours, and then vacuum up the residue. Repeat the process if necessary. Be careful so that your pet does not accidentally swallow abrasive particles.
