How to get rid of musty odor in the closet: simple life hacks

Yulia PoteriankoLife
A cramped closet can cause an unpleasant odor

Clothes left in the closet for many months, for example, for seasonal storage, can acquire an unpleasant odor. The main reason for this is the lack of air circulation. Special fresheners can help fix the problem, but their composition is not always natural: the smell can be questionable, and the intensity of the aroma can be excessive.

Therefore, household experts recommend making fresheners for the wardrobe yourself. OBOZ.UA tells you about recipes for such a product. They will work for quite a long time, and you can choose the flavor to your liking.

Why does the closet have an unpleasant odor?

The problem can arise from mistakes in storing things. We often make them due to a lack of space, time, or attention to the items we use.

First of all, you shouldn't store dirty clothes and textiles. However, the closet itself should be clean too. Therefore, several times a year, for example, during the spring and fall wardrobe changes, you need to wipe the shelves. You can use plain water for this, or you can add a pinch of salt to it and a few drops of your favorite essential oil. The product itself will freshen up the atmosphere in the closet, and the salt emulsifier will help to avoid greasy stains as the oil added to the salt will completely dissolve.

In addition, it is important to put only completely dry clothes on the shelves and hang them on the rods. After all, moisture is the main reason for the growth of bacteria that cause unpleasant odors.

You shouldn't fill your closet to the brim either. Things that are stacked too tightly will sooner or later start to smell moldy due to insufficient air circulation.

When you come home and take off your coat or jacket, don't rush to hang it in the closet right away. During the day, your clothes are saturated with various aromas, for example, when you visit a restaurant. Over time, these odors can transfer to other things. Therefore, leave your outerwear to air out for at least half an hour before hiding it.

How to make natural wardrobe fresheners at home?

Coffee is a great way to neutralize unpleasant odors. Pour a little ground coffee into a small bowl and place it on the bottom of the wardrobe in a place where it will be difficult to turn it over. Lemon or orange zest can also be a great substitute for coffee.

You can also get rid of unpleasant odors from the cabinet with a roll of scented toilet paper. Just place it on the shelves next to your clothes. You can also use ordinary paper by applying a little essential oil to it beforehand. This method should be enough for a few weeks.

Soap or scented candles are also good flavorings. Remove them from the packaging and place them in a place where they will not touch the fabric. This way, they will not leave stains.

Scented bath salts also work well. Pour a little into a linen bag and hang it in the closet. Change the filler as the scent wears off.
