What is the danger of horseradish

Allowing horseradish to grow freely in the garden for a year or two will pose a danger. The main problem is that horseradish literally occupies the plots, entwining all the free space with its roots and outcompeting neighbors.

Ordinary digging will not be very effective; the resilience of horseradish is so impressive that it can regenerate even from the smallest root residue. The roots can grow up to 7 meters deep.

How to remove horseradish

Two basic rules for dealing with horseradish can be summarized as follows:

1. Avoid cutting the roots with a shovel or other sharp objects. It is futile and even risky, as horseradish may start to root even deeper.
2. After processing, carefully remove all small root particles from the soil. If not, they may start growing again in a few days.

Sprinkle fresh horseradish slices immediately with table salt. While experts often advise using herbicides on horseradish, it's important to note that herbicides will only turn the leaves yellow; this method won't have any effect on the roots.

To remove the roots, use a special pitchfork that picks them up and pulls them out of the soil, rather than a shovel.

Cover the horseradish area with a strong, lightproof material, such as roofing felt, and press it down with something heavy. Deprived of light, all plants, including tenacious horseradish, will die.

In general, it's better to plant horseradish in separate metal or plastic containers or to fence the beds with this plant using deep trenches.
