How to easily get rid of flies at home: scents that repel insects

Annoying flies can disrupt the enjoyment of the best summer weather. Fortunately, you can effectively get rid of them with the help of scents that are friendly to humans.

Pest control expert Jordan Foster shared this information with the Express. According to him, the most commonly found pests in human homes are house flies and fruit flies. House flies are relatively large, measuring 6-8 mm in length, while fruit flies are rarely larger than 4 mm. However, both are attracted to the smell of household garbage, especially food waste.

The keen sense of smell of these insects enables them to detect these odors from a considerable distance. Even a small amount of organic matter is enough to attract them to the house. The reproduction of flies is facilitated by humidity, so any stagnant water in the house becomes a breeding ground for their eggs, making it more challenging to ward them off.

However, certain scents can help with this task. "The strong aroma of essential oils, such as mint, eucalyptus, lavender, and citrus fruits, repels flies," explained the expert. These oils can be used in diffusers, sprays, or even by leaving cotton swabs soaked in them in places where flies are particularly bothersome.

Another effective option is vinegar. Simply mix white vinegar with water in equal proportions and pour it into a spray bottle to create a fly spray. It can be sprayed on surfaces that insects are attracted to and can also serve as a cleaning agent.

Aromatic herbs and spices like basil, mint, rosemary, or cloves also repel flies and are beneficial for use in the kitchen. Placing a bouquet of herbs on the table serves a dual purpose - not only can they be used for cooking, but they will also deter pests from approaching the table.

Flowers can also assist in the fight against flies. Flies dislike the scent of lavender or marigolds, so having a pot with such flowers on the windowsill is a suitable addition in the warm season.
