How to clean the kitchen sink: a simple life hack

The kitchen sink can get clogged quite often. Every day, a lot of food residue and grease gets into the drain, which can settle on the pipe and narrow its opening. Therefore, having an effective way to clean it will be very useful.

Sante Plus suggests using a plumbing cable. This method does not require any aggressive chemicals and will work quite quickly. This device looks like a long wire with a rotating handle. You need to lower it into the drain and use the handle to mechanically clean the pipe.

There are professional types of this tool. They are, for example, connected to an electric drill or screwdriver and run on electricity. But such cables are expensive. A simpler version can be purchased for a couple of hundred hryvnias or even made with your own hands from scrap materials.

How to make a plumbing cable yourself

Take a fairly thick and long wire, if you have one, or an ordinary wire clothes hanger. The hanger will have to be straightened into the wire using pliers or a similar tool. At the same time, keep the bent end as this will be your rotating handle.

If necessary, cut the working end of the wire at an angle so that it can easily fit into the sink drain. The tool is ready.

How to use a plumbing cable

To unclog the blockage, gently lower the working end of the cable into the drain without using force. Gradually push it forward until you hit an obstruction. This may not necessarily be the blockage itself, but a pipe joint, for example. To make sure you've reached the problem, try lifting the cable a few centimeters, repositioning it slightly, and pushing it through again. If the cable hits the same obstacle again, it's a blockage.

Now start gradually moving the device inside the pipe back and forth to break through the blockage. At the same time, use the handle to rotate the cable. It's a good idea to pour hot water down the drain at the same time as this should make it easier. Make sure that your cable is taut at all times.

When you feel that the blockage is broken through and the cable is free to move on, you can take the tool out. Rinse the pipe with plenty of hot water. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated. The same method will work with blockages in the bathroom.
