How to clean stainless steel appliances: simple methods

Stainless steel requires a delicate approach to cleaning

Stainless steel is a beautiful, convenient and durable material for making all kinds of surfaces, facades and kitchen appliances. Kettles and countertops, refrigerators and plumbing fixtures: all can be made of it. However, this material has a significant drawback: it can easily leave stains that are very noticeable. That's why it's important to know how to clean stainless steel easily, quickly, and most importantly, effectively, so that no scratches remain on the surfaces.

The Sun turned to housekeeping expert Linda Mason for advice on this matter. She wrote a book on how to keep your home clean using natural and eco-friendly products. Naturally, she advised several ways to clean stainless steel using something that can be found in literally every kitchen.

What not to clean with

The expert immediately warned against the use of harsh abrasives and brushes, powdered cleaners, bleach, and ammonia. All of these can damage stainless steel mechanically or chemically. Mason advises to give preference to liquid products and soft cloths and sponges for their application.

Glass cleaner

Anything that removes dirt from glass and makes it shine will always work on stainless steel. Alcoholic, acidic or surfactant-based, they are designed to dissolve dirt stains and work well thanks to their liquid formula. Spray the cleaner onto the surface, wipe it off with a sponge and polish it to a high shine with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Flour

Unlike scouring powders, flour is a very fine substance and cannot scratch stainless steel. Put a small amount of this product on a dry microfiber cloth and rub it on the surface you need. Yes, flour is unlikely to cope with stubborn dirt and old stains, but it is perfect for daily cleaning. An important caveat is that the surface should also be dry so that the flour does not start to turn into dough and leave dirt on its own.

Vinegar and oil

This is a two-phase cleaning that will not only get rid of stubborn dirt on the steel surface but also provide it with additional protection. Pour vinegar into a spray bottle. If there are no stubborn stains on your surface, you can dilute it with water in a 1:1 ratio to make it even milder. Leave it on for a few seconds and then wipe it off with a lint-free cloth. After that, apply a few drops of vegetable oil to a dry microfiber cloth and wipe the surface thoroughly. This will make it water-repellent.
