How to clean a washing machine from limescale: you need one simple ingredient

Hard tap water can cause a whole lot of problems - from limescale in the kettle to the breakdown of complex appliances like a washing machine. But while it's easy enough to clean a kettle, it may seem impossible to fix a washing machine without disassembling the mechanism.

However, in reality, everything is much simpler. Simple products that can be bought at any supermarket can help to rid the device of scale. OBOZ.UA asked what experts have to say about this.

First of all, they advise descaling at least once every 3-6 months. This will help keep the washing machine in good condition for a long time and improve the quality of its work.

The products they recommend for descaling are white vinegar, citric acid, and baking soda - either soda ash or regular baking soda. Vinegar or citric acid will help destroy plaque, and soda will prevent deposits on the machine mechanism.

The acidic cleaner is quite easy to use. Just pour a cup of white vinegar, strained lemon juice, or citric acid solution into an empty drum and select a long wash program with a high water temperature. There should be no clothes in the machine.

As for baking soda, it is used as a water softener with every wash. Soda ash should be added strictly according to the instructions. This is a rather active substance and an excessive dosage can harm both the machine and the clothes. Baking soda should be put into the appropriate compartment of the washing machine along with the powder. Half a cup per wash cycle should be enough. Soda will help to get rid of odors, remove stains, reduce the amount of foam, and slow down the deposition of lime on the internal parts of the mechanism.
