Mistakes when growing seedlings

Late winter and early spring is the time when many people start growing seedlings. It may seem easy at first, but gardening is a laborious process that requires a lot of knowledge and attention. Unfortunately, even experienced gardeners sometimes do things that can ruin the harvest.

OBOZ.UA has prepared an article about common mistakes that should be avoided when growing seedlings.

Low-quality seeds

Saving money when buying materials can result in a bad harvest. Choose only high-quality seeds from trusted producers, paying attention to the expiration date.

Lack of preparation

If you are not completely sure that your seeds are healthy and of good quality, you should disinfect them. Before sowing, place the seed in a manganese solution for 20 minutes and then rinse it in water.

Also, to be sure of the result, it is recommended to germinate the seeds before planting. To do this, place them in melted water or melted aloe juice for no more than 20 hours.

When the seedlings are ready, they need to be hardened before planting them outdoors. To do this, it is taken outside for several hours every day, gradually increasing the time spent in the fresh air.

Failure to meet the deadlines

Recommendations for sowing seeds are usually indicated on the package. If they are not followed, there is a high probability that when the seedlings are planted in open ground, they simply will not take root.

If you collected the seeds yourself, the best time to sow and plant them outdoors can be determined by the weather forecast.

Unsuitable soil

Seedlings need a good soil mixture. It usually consists of sod, peat, and humus, but the ratio differs for different crops.

It is not recommended to use soil from the garden, as it may contain pathogens and pests. The best option is to buy ready-made soil from a specialized store.

Wrong container

You need to choose the right container. Some plants need space, and some grow well only in tight pots.

Not repotting in time

Untimely transplanting can lead to thickening of the seedlings and damage to the roots. Also, unthinned crops may not be strong enough and die after picking.

Repotting

Some plants, however, do not tolerate change well at all, so they should be planted in a permanent location right away.

Unsuitable conditions

It's important not only to take good care of the seedlings but also to create favorable conditions for their growth. You should provide the plants with light and keep them warm.

Cold-resistant crops need 15-25 degrees, while heat-loving crops need a temperature of 27-30.

It is also necessary to water the seedlings on time, but not too much water, because excessive moisture can cause rotting of the seeds and roots of the plant.
