Wisteria spreads quickly, so it needs to be pruned twice a year

Spring is coming soon and the gardens will begin to bloom. It's time to prepare them for the flowering season. And what is a better way to do this than to prune plants before they start to grow actively?

OBOZ.UA asked experts for advice on which plants are best pruned right now to make them bloom magnificently. They named three species that need to be taken care of in February because removing dead stems will provide them with extremely abundant flowering.

Rhododendrons

Winter is the perfect time to prune rhododendrons that have grown too large or are not blooming as lushly. If you take care of them in February, they will have a full season to grow back and cover themselves with flowers.

For those who are doing a heavy pruning, choose a frost-free day in February and cut the branches to the point where dormant buds will give new growth. You can also remove branches that grow inside the bush and therefore do not receive sunlight. This will also increase air circulation in the crown. You should also cut off all diseased stems by cutting them off below the affected area.

Deciduous shrubs with early flowering

Annual pruning of early flowering deciduous shrubs in late winter helps to encourage strong, healthy growth and more abundant flowering in the season ahead. However, there is an exception to this rule: you shouldn't do this procedure for shrubs that will bloom in March. They will not have time to recover in such a short time. For the rest, shape them into a bowl to create a balanced branch structure open to the air and sun.

Wisteria

This plant with amazingly beautiful blooms has a tendency to grow very quickly. February is the perfect time to bring this process under control. The second pruning is best done in mid-summer. To properly prune wisteria in February, remove thin shoots up to the size of two to three buds from the stem. This way, the plant will look neat at the beginning of the season, and its foliage will not cover the flowers.
