Etiquette rules that everyone breaks unintentionally: a list

There are several rules of etiquette that everyone unintentionally violates. For example, it is customary to let a woman go first - but even this rule has exceptions that few people know about. You shouldn't stir tea in a circular motion and you shouldn't wish "be well" if a stranger sneezes.

If you feel like yawning, you should cover your mouth - but it turns out that there is a difference in which hand you should do it with. Read about the rules of etiquette that are too often violated in the OBOZREVATEL article.

How not to stir sugar

According to the rules of etiquette, sugar should be stirred in a reciprocating motion. The reason is simple: when stirring in a circle, the spoon touches the walls of the cup, creating an annoying knocking sound.

Rule "Be healthy"

A stranger sneezes next to you, and you, wanting to show off your good manners, say "bless you." In high society and among aristocrats, this is considered bad manners and a gross violation of personal boundaries. Etiquette experts advise simply ignoring a stranger's sneeze. You shouldn't say "bless you" to a work client, unfamiliar colleague, salesperson, or person in line. As a last resort, you can simply offer a tissue or handkerchief.

Which hand to use to cover your mouth

When sneezing, coughing, or yawning, you should cover your mouth with your left hand. We usually greet people with our right hand, so we should respect the comfort and health of others.

Can I congratulate a woman on her wedding?

The rules of etiquette say that it is necessary to congratulate a man on the wedding. And it's not about gender inequality. The explanation is quite cute: it is usually the man who takes the initiative, proposes, and wins the woman's heart. So men are congratulated on their weddings, and women are wished happiness.

When not to let a woman go first

According to the rules of etiquette, a man should be the first to enter an elevator, because an elevator can be considered a dangerous place. As for the exit, the rule of the closest person applies: the first person to leave is the one standing at the door.

Is it possible to use the first name for younger people?

If a person is 12 years old or younger, they should be addressed as (their name)  . This rule of etiquette is often ignored. We are used to calling people by their first names, especially teenagers. In fact, we should show respect to everyone, regardless of age.
